Most gardens that keep dying have a drainage or soil problem, not a plant problem. So we check the ground first, then plan, plant and build.
Why we work this way
Sort the ground first and the rest looks after itself.
Plenty of people can roll out turf or stack a few sleepers. For a month or two, it looks fine.
Then summer comes. Turf laid on hard clay burns off. A wall with no drainage behind it starts to lean. Plants that were cheap that week sit in the wrong spot and give up.
So we look at the ground before we plan anything. These five things decide how a garden does.
Soil
Sand, clay or sandstone. It decides what grows, what drains and what a wall can sit on.
Drainage
Water that sits drowns roots and pushes walls over. We find where it runs before we build.
Sun and shade
Lawns and plants need the right amount of light. We watch how the sun moves across the yard.
Water
By hand, by tap timer or by a system. We plan for a dry summer, not a wet spring.
